Dargaville sits on the Wairoa River at the head of the Kaipara Harbour — Northland's west coast. 60 minutes west of Whangarei, 2hr 15min north of Auckland. The character is genuinely different from the Mangawhai-Bay-of-Islands corridor on the east coast: agricultural hinterland, black-sand beaches (Ripiro, Baylys), a smaller tourism economy, and materially lower section prices. Dargaville is the Kaipara District's western administrative centre — hospital, high school, supermarkets, a main street. Surrounding settlements (Tinopai, Pouto, Matakohe) offer lifestyle blocks with harbour or bush frontage at prices that would buy a quarter-section in Mangawhai. TODO(matt): add local specifics — who's buying, practical caveats on west-coast living, commute realities.
